This is a stylish cake suitable for any birthday celebration. Number cakes and Naked cakes are really popular now, and its easy to see why! This 18th birthday cake is red velvet with cream cheese buttercream, berries and buttercream flowers. However any age, flavour and colour scheme can be combined to make a personalised birthday cake for your loved one.
Naked cakes are also big right now. Unlike the majority of celebration cakes, where the whole cake is covered in either a buttercream or sugar paste icing, only the centre of the cake is filled. This allows you to see the layers of cake and filling. This is part of a trend towards a more casual/ no fuss style…even though it takes plenty of look to achieve the no fuss look!
This Minions cake was made for 5 year old Brooklyn. Its 4 layers of chocolate and vanilla cake layered with chocolate buttercream. Minions are a tricky but fun cake to make. Popular from their first appearance on screen in Despicable me, they went on to have their own spin off movie Minions. These fun loving little guys are a firm favourite with boys and girls of all ages.
What kind of cake do you make to celebrate your son turning 13 and playing their first music gig? This was the request that came from a customer recently. The answer was obvious…a piano cake!
The cake is a classic vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream. It was carved into the piano shape and covered in sugar paste. The music book on top of the cake is fully edible too! It was made out of sugar paste and little music note were added in using a food colouring pen.
Lil’ Outrageous Littles or LOL Dolls are hugely popular at the moment. These little “dolls with attitude” are the latest collectable toys for young girls. So it was no surprise that I was asked to make an LOL Dolls cake for a birthday party! I used edible images of the dolls all around the side of the cake and another figure on top. Even the oversized bow is edible…this cake is sure to make an eye catching centre piece at any birthday girls party!
A little bit shabby chic, but 100% delicious! Buttercream flowers are a simple yet stylish way of adding colour and a bit of personality to a cake. For this birthday cake, I made buttercream roses and tulips . I also added some fresh raspberries for some colour , but also as a nod to the cake inside. This is a gluten free vanilla cake with raspberry and white chocolate filling. As the birthday girl has an intolerance to gluten, all the decorations had to be gluten free too.
I chose the colour scheme to tie in with the fresh raspberries, but of course the combinations of colours and flowers is limitless.
Hen Party Cake
Buttercream flowers hen party cake
The request for this Hen Party cake was “Girly, sparkly and Pretty”. I was also told that the flavour didn’t matter as they probably wouldn’t eat much! Thankfully the cake was a success on all fronts, the Hen loved the buttercream and fondant flowers and the chocolate cake inside went down a treat. I was even sent photos of the last few crumbs left on the plate!
First there was RTD2 and then there was BB8, the cute little droid in the Star Wars Galaxy. BB8 first popped up in The Force Awakens and then again in The Last Jedi.
The body of the cake is a vanilla cake and the head is chocolate cake. The cake can be made in any flavour, vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, lemon or carrot cake. All the details on the BB8 cake are edible…even the stones and sand. BB8 oozes character and I think this cake does too! It’s suitable for any age…from 7 to 70 the star wars fan I your life will love this cake for a birthday or any other celebration. I’ve even made this cake for a girls first communion celebration! Ray and Lea would be very proud
Ninjas go! Lego ninjagos is the latest…and greatest Lego movie to be released. Its the 3rd movie celebrating the world famous Danish toy brand, after Lego Movie and Lego Batman. So, it’s no surprise that a Lego Ninjago cake is on the wish list of many boys and girls this year. With so many characters to choose from…Kai, Llyod, Nya, Cole, Jay , Zane, Master Wu and of course Garmadon, everyone has their favourite.
Lego Ninjago Nya
This cake is based around Nya, master of water and sister to Kai. The cake topper comes complete with her samurai sword and head scarf.
The cake itself is a tradional vanilla cake, with vanilla buttercream and covered in white fondant. Across the top of the Lego Ninjago Cake is the title Ninjago written in classic Ninja script. Even the cake base is Lego themed, mimicking the well known Lego board an essential for any building project!

It seems that everything unicorn is popular at the moment…from slippers to hairbands and everything in between. So its no surprise that kids everywhere are looking for a unicorn cake for their birthday.
The cakes are made of 2 tiers, each tier can be a different flavour. Vanilla, chocolate, chocolate biscuit cake, red velvet, lemon…the choice is yours! The cakes are covered in sugar paste (fondant) and then the mane is piped on top and along the back. The picture above shows a side view of the unicorn cake so you can see the full impact of this technique. Of course, you can’t have unicorn without their signature horn an horsey ears!
